Economic and welfare impacts of providing Good Life Opportunities to farm a

A paper on the Impacts of Good Life Opportunities, written by a collaboration of renowned animal welfare experts from the Bristol Vet School, Royal Agricultural University, Rothamsted Research and ADAS, was published on the MDPI website on 2 April 2020.

The study, using data from UK laying hen farms, connects an input-based framework on positive welfare opportunities to positive and negative welfare outcomes. It presents the scientific and economic benefits of introducing quality of life measures into farm assurance schemes to encourage farmers to deliver higher welfare to farm animals.

The authors highlight that existing legislation and food certifications give little consideration to the behavioural freedoms of farm animals. They argue that animal welfare should be measured and evaluated by positive experiences and a ‘good life’ for animals, not just the absence of negatives.
